They grow up quickly and they don’t seem ready to stop. SKI LODGE (an indie band from NYC) is my discovery of the beginning of this year 2013 and I’m still amazed of their course. Andrew Marr the lead singer of the band made me the pleasure to answer my questions. With the project of Ski Lodge he is not at his first try, indeed he was previously in the band called The Clementines. Their music at the first listening look like to current indie bands like Two Door Cinema Club for instance but that is not really the case: the band has its own influences however they remain one of a kind.

Can you describe your band in some words ? Which kind of music do you play ?
Andrew: Our sound is kind of jangly guitar pop. The songs are very vocally driven. But yea I usually tell people it’s an « indie pop » band and tell them to just listen and determine what it is for themselves.
En fait notre son est un mélange de guitares et cliquetis pop. Les chansons suivent la voix, qui elle-même dirige les instruments. C’est vrai que j’ai l’habitude de dire aux gens que c’est de la pop indépendante et je les encourage ensuite d’écouter pour qu’ils se fassent leur propre opinion sur le genre.
You are also qualified as an indie/pop-rock band. Is is important for you to remain in this style of music ? Why independant music ?
Andrew: I think it’s somewhat important to remain in a similar style to what it is now. Just so i can continue to develop a fan base and they can have some idea of what to expect. If i wanted to write music in a totally different style i would probably just do it under a different name. I think its important to attach « indie » to our description because it tells people that we probably aren’t the type of pop music that you would hear on FM radio.
Je pense que c’est important de rester dans notre genre actuel. De cette manière je peux garder un banc de fans solide qui savent à quoi s’attendre de notre musique. Si j’avais voulu faire un autre genre de musique je l’aurais probablement fait sous un autre pseudo. Je crois que c’est important d’accoler « indie » à notre description parce que ça montre tout de suite aux gens que nous ne sommes pas ce genre d’artistes pop qu’on peut écouter en boucle à la radio.
If I am right, you are a big fan of the Smiths, do they influence you in the music you make ?
Andrew: Yes, huge fan of the smiths. They definitely influence my music, i’ve listened to them so much, i think it would be very difficult to not have some of that come out in my songwriting. whether its concious or unconcious…
Oui, je suis un grand fan des Smiths. Bien sûr qu’ils influencent ma musique, je les ai écouté tellement de fois qu’il serait désormais difficile de pas y voir quelque part leur influence dans l’écriture de mes chansons. Que ce soit conscient ou inconscient même.
What are your other music tastes ?
Andrew: I like a lot of different types of music. Some of my favorite bands include the walkmen, new order, the cure, joy division, the strokes, beach house. I also like certain classical music, some jazz, electronic dance music, rap/hip hop.
J’ai une large palette de goûts musicaux. Parmi mes groupes favoris: The Walkmen, New Order, The Cure, Joy Division, The Strokes, Beach House. J’apprécie aussi la musique classique, du jazz, la musique électronique, voire même du rap et hip/hop.
It is very personal but you make me think to the Beatles. You are a kind of the moderns Beatles for me. Can you explain us the story of the song « I would die to Be » ?
Andrew: yea, the song was inspired by a frustrating relationship situation i was in a few years ago. I started writing it while i was still seeing her just to kind of vent some of my anger that things weren’t going like i wanted them to. Things didn’t end up working out…
La chanson m’a été inspirée d’une expérience personnelle, d’une de mes relations il y a quelques années. J’ai commencé à l’écrire au moment où notre relation s’est dégradée, on ne se voyait plus souvent et ma colère s’est incarnée dans cette chanson lorsque notre histoire ne s’est pas déroulée de la manière dont je le voulais.
Where is the best place you would like to go to set a concert ?
Andrew: to play a concert, or to see a concert? i guess for both, my answer might be The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Seems like a pretty magical place.
Pour jouer un concert ou pour voir un concert ? Je pense que pour les deux ma réponse serait le Greek Theatre à Los Angeles. C’est un lieu magique.
You have participated to the NYC Popfest festival in june with Beach Day and Plastic Flowers as well. How did you feel then ?
Andrew: Yea, i was really excited about NYC Popfest! It was a great line-up this year and they have had a ton of great bands that have played it in the past. Excited to be a part of the tradition and to play for so many loyal indie-pop fans.
Oui j’étais impatient à l’idée de participer au festival Popfest à New York ! On a eu une super programmation cette année et la plupart des bons groupes y avaient déjà joué dans le passé. J’étais excité de faire parti de la tradition et de jouer pour des fans de musique indie pop.
You have just came out a title from your next album Just to be like you which was available since april, 16th. What are the reviews and people’s feelings about it ?
Andrew: Yea, « Just To Be Like You » is the first single from a debut LP which will be out in July. The single only were available on April 16th. It seems like everyone who has heard it has enjoyed it. We’ve gotten a bunch of love from blogs and we had the premier of it on Pitchfork which was great. I’m really excited for people to hear more stuff.
Just to be like you est le premier single extrait de l’album qui sortira en juillet. Le single uniquement est sorti le 16 avril. Actuellement on a de bons retours, tout le monde l’a apprécié. On a reçu beaucoup d’amour de la part de blogs, notamment un super article de Pitchfork. Je suis vraiment impatient que les gens puissent écouter les prochains titres !
Maybe a European tour this time, a pretext to celebrate this new release ?
Andrew: I would love to come to Europe to tour. Once this LP is out i think there is a good chance that will happen.
J’aimerais beaucoup faire une tournée en Europe. Une fois que notre album est sorti, je pense que ça sera une bonne occasion d’y songer.
Do you think music is getting elvolving ? I mean, there is many bands which are starting slowly. Maybe big towns as New York, Los Angeles or London are cities of music where you can produce your music easier than before ?
lAndrew: Yea the way people find music and new bands has completely evolved. Its all about the internet and stumbling on to your new favorite band on a blog or on a friends facebook wall. I love living in New York, because it has so many opportunities for a band like ours to grow in.
La manière de rechercher la musique a complétement évolué et sûrement pour le changement a été plus important pour les nouveaux groupes. Grâce à Internet, nous avons la possibilité de partager les chansons de notre nouveau groupe préféré que ce soit sur un blog, ou sur le mur Facebook d’un ami. J’adore vivre dans une grande ville comme New York parce que ça y regorge d’opportunités à saisir pour des groupes comme le notre.
